Supporting research and development efforts.
General Motors contracted CCC to build a Clean Room and Materials Lab at the Vehicle Engineering Lab (VEL) building located at their Tech Center in Warren, Michigan. The clean room and lab were created to support General Motors’ research and development efforts for next generation batteries. The area included a new coating room, cell assembly area and gowning room within the VEL Lab area. The only other lab of similar purpose within GM is located in China.
CCC acted as the project manager and the scope of work included construction and supply of the new clean room and lab, and all mechanical and electrical support systems. Twelve subcontractors were used, and CCC self-performed all carpentry and equipment setting work.
The construction posed some problems for CCC as the requirements were incomplete and changing constantly. Also, adding to the project’s complexity was abatement of lead paint and adjacent areas had to remain operational during construction. However, even with the many difficulties, CCC completed the project in 10 months with over 15,000 man-hours recorded without a single safety incident or injury.
