Starplus Energy, a joint venture of automotive OEM Stellantis and battery manufacturer Samsung SDI, selected Commercial Contracting Corporation (CCC) and our joint venture partner to provide Design/Build construction services for a new lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility in Kokomo, Indiana. The plant will launch with an annual production capacity of 33 gigawatt-hours (GWh).
CCC’s preconstruction services included detailed pricing estimates and forecasting, on-going value engineering throughout preconstruction (and construction phases), trade partner selection and coordination, constructability and execution reviews, progressive design development and management, major equipment identification and pull-ahead procurement, and real-time scheduling and forecasting.
The greenfield facility is built on nearly 300 acres and includes 21 buildings totaling over 3.3 million square feet. Buildings designed and constructed by our team with joint venture partners included the Battery Cell Building, Formation Building, Central Utility Building (CUB), Central Control Room, multiple buildings for electrical equipment, waste storage, NMP supply, and multiple buildings for various chemicals and gases used in the manufacturing of batteries.
To meet the demanding schedule and overcome labor constraints created by competing mega-projects, CCC self-performed all of the concrete, fabrication and steel erection for 12 auxiliary buildings, formation building clean room / dry room walls and ceilings, and select carpentry on the project.
