A123 Systems: Romulus Coating Facility
A123 Systems is one of the world’s leading suppliers of high‐power
lithium ion batteries. Their proprietary design, achieved by
manipulating materials at the nano scale, has allowed them to
make one of the least expensive, longest‐lasting ion batteries on
the market today.
These devices are
precise, state‐of‐the‐art
machines that require
the utmost care and
precision when
manufacturing. Because
of this, it was only
natural that A123
turned to Commercial
Contracting Corporation to act as Construction Manager when
renovating what was to become their new cathode and anode
coating facility in Romulus, MI.
The almost 300,000 square foot warehouse chosen by A123 would
be comprised of two areas: a 15,000 square foot office area
and a 272,000 square foot manufacturing area. The aggressive
timeline set by A123 made the two‐phase project a difficult one
where organization was paramount to success. CCC was responsible for managing every phase of the project lifecycle: from design review
and bid package preparation to sub‐contractor management and obtaining the Certificate of
Occupancy, we ensured that all the steps were completed on time and on budget.
Services provided for this project include complete renovation of
interior office space, utilities fit-up, structural modifications,
and process equipment setting, installation, and hook‐up.
With the completion of the Romulus Coating Facility, A123
Systems expects their final assembly capacity to more than
double, from 169 megawatt hours (MWh) per year to over
360MWh per year.
